The undergrad slaves are without a slave driver for a couple weeks, as my dad put it. Lindsey has headed home for a couple weeks of vacation and to satisfy the need to leave the country before her 90 day tourist visa expires. She'll be back at the end of August in time for the first nest of turtles to hatch (hopefully!). However, the undergrads getting a couple weeks off (well, minimal duties, at least) is perfect timing.
Utila is kicking off it's first ever dive festival. It's being put on by the dive shops on the island are working together along with a number of big name sponsors to host the festival. All week long, various dive shops are hosting an assortment of events such as an underwater cleanup, a peak performance buoyancy workshop, night dives, and sunrise dives. In the evenings, there will be presentations and other activities. There are also fun things like a volleyball tournament and a underwater scuba olympics.
Tonight, the festival kicked off with opening ceremonies down at the public beach. There was BBQ, live music, and a DJ. The live music was presented by Scuba Cowboy. No, I'd never heard of him either. But how can you not love a musician who sings songs with titles like "Wetter is Better" and "Yer My Chum" (a song about how a seasick dive buddy draws the fish). There was also raffles for an Aqualung regulator, a GoPro camera, a reel and surface buoy, and a couple different scuba courses. No winning for Robyn or I tonight but, with all the give-aways this week, we're still hoping!
